Branding and Identity Update

There are changes ahead...

Our Chief Executive, Egg Cameron, gives us a rundown on what’s happening at Move the Masses and why you’ll see some changes across our website and social media in the next few months.

A little bit of background...

Move the Masses has been running for just under four years, and in that time has rapidly grown from a micro charity running small community projects to a well-established and trusted charity supporting hundreds of people.

When we started Move the Masses, our focus was on increasing participation in outdoor exercise. We did this through providing instructor-led sessions at outdoor gyms, pay-as-you-feel fitness sessions and providing information on the location and use of outdoor fitness facilities through our Move Map.

Move Mates – our walking buddy project – started as a small pilot to address accessing physical activity at a more basic level: people feeling confident to leave their homes to go for a walk. Post-pandemic, we’ve seen a huge increase in the number and range of people needing this type of project and Move Mates has really become our flagship project. So the way we increase participation in physical activity, has changed.

The vast majority of people who come to us now, do so because of Move Mates. Our Move Mates project is also growing outside of York, with projects starting this summer in Durham and Leeds. We have our sights set on launching Move Mates in East Riding and in other areas of North Yorkshire too.

So what's changing and why?

Recent feedback from our volunteers, partner organisations, funders and people who participate in our projects has made it clear to us that people are confused. Are they part of Move Mates, or Move the Masses? (Answer: both!)

As Move Mates makes up 90% of the work we do (and the funding we receive), we have made the decision to give the project its own branded website, and its own social media. This will give better clarity to everybody who is interested in or who participates in Move Mates.

If you follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, you’ll notice that we’ll be changing our handles in the next month to reflect that these accounts are now all about Move Mates. We’ll set up new accounts with a focus on outdoor fitness for those who came to us to get moving at outdoor gyms! Separating out these projects gives us a great opportunity to provide specific content for each audience.

Finally, over the next few months you’ll see changes on our website, as we simplify our Move the Masses website and shift all of our Move Mates content onto its own website.

Of course we’ll keep you up to date on all these changes on social media as they happen, and via our newsletters, so do subscribe (at the bottom of the page) to stay in the loop.
